What Star Wars Taught Me About Turning Services Into Product

When I took a long break from my career, one of the happiest things I did was rewatch Star Wars with my dad.
He watched it in a theatre when it first came out, which I still think is a flex. 💪
Somehow, the obsession has now made its way to the next generation.
I’ve been slowly turning my nephew into a Star Wars nerd too.
A toy here. A Lego set there. Nothing too obvious. 😛
The funny thing about Star Wars is that people sometimes don’t want to start watching it because it never really ended with the movies.
The Clone Wars. The Mandalorian. Andor.
Different stories. Different characters. Different eras.
As a viewer, it can feel like a lot.
But if you’re the company, that’s kind of the point.
The galaxy already exists.
You don’t have to start from zero every time. There are characters you can build on, stories you can explore and parts of the universe you haven’t touched yet.
I’ve been researching services companies lately, and I’ve started seeing something similar.
A company might have solved the same kind of problem for 10, 20, 50 customers.
Every project is different, so every project gets treated as a new engagement.
But after doing that for years, what has actually accumulated?
Tools. Processes. Know-how. Data. Relationships.
Things built for one customer that got used again.
Things that got better with every project.
Things that started as part of delivery but could potentially become something of their own.
And that’s the question I find more interesting than:
“What product should we build?”
“What have we already built without realising it?”
Not every service needs to become a product.
But product revenue doesn’t always have to begin with a blank page.
Sometimes the interesting stuff is already sitting inside the work.
You just have to notice it.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have another Star Wars toy to strategically introduce to my nephew.
